community parent resource center the play project

FIRST has directed families to resources and given them information on education issues and other disability topics.

FIRST focuses on helping the community include persons with disabilities and persons with disabilities to be included.

About FIRST

FIRST grew out of conversations between parents and special education providers. During comparisons of ideas and information, the idea for an information and support center for families was born. This diversity of viewpoints is a strength that serves FIRST well. We continue to remain the same parent organization with the same purposes:

Mission

FIRST is a community benefit organization dedicated to providing information, education, support and advocacy to persons with disabilities, their family and the community.

Purpose

  • Train families to become effective self-advocates through education and advocacy.

  • Provide information, guidance and unique support to families of children with disabilities as they access services from the wide array of public, private services and resources.

  • Focus on the family as a whole, rather than isolating the child with a disability recognizing that families need the same supports no matter the age of their child.

  • Support persons with disabilities to self determine their lives in areas of education, employment, housing and recreation in our community.
